A root canal is the most reliable way to save a tooth whose nerve has been damaged by deep decay, fracture, or infection. Despite its reputation, a modern root canal is not significantly more uncomfortable than a filling. The pain people associate with root canals is usually the pain they had before the procedure, not during or after it.

If you have a severe toothache, swelling, or lingering sensitivity to hot and cold, a root canal may be what is needed to save the tooth and stop the pain. The alternative is usually extraction, which leaves a gap that must be filled with an implant, bridge, or partial denture. Whenever possible, saving your natural tooth is the better option.

How a Root Canal Works

Local anesthesia completely numbs the tooth and surrounding tissue.
Access opening made through the top of the tooth.
Pulp removal of the infected or damaged nerve tissue.
Cleaning and shaping of the root canals with tiny files.
Irrigation with antibacterial solution.
Filling the canals with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha.
Core buildup to rebuild the tooth structure.
Crown placed in a second visit to protect the tooth.

Why You Need a Crown After a Root Canal

A root-canaled tooth becomes brittle over time because it no longer has nerve supply. A crown protects the tooth from fracture, which is the main reason root-canaled teeth fail. Our $950 root canal pricing includes the crown for this reason.
