A dental crown is a custom-made cap that covers and protects a damaged tooth, restoring its shape, strength, and function. When a tooth has been weakened by a large filling, cracked from injury or grinding, or treated with a root canal, a crown is usually the best way to keep it functional for years to come. Crowns are one of the most common and reliable restorations in modern dentistry.
At Macomb Emergency Dental Clinic, we place crowns on cracked and broken teeth the same day they are diagnosed whenever possible, using a temporary crown first and placing the permanent one at a second visit once it is custom-fabricated. Our crowns are tooth-colored porcelain, depending on the tooth and the forces it has to handle.
When You Need a Crown
- After a root canal to protect the weakened tooth
- For a broken or cracked tooth that cannot be repaired with a filling
- When a large old filling is failing or breaking the surrounding tooth
- For severely worn teeth from grinding
Types of Crowns We Offer
Porcelain (All-Ceramic)
Natural-looking, metal-free, excellent cosmetics. Best for front teeth and visible areas.
Zirconia
Extremely strong, tooth-colored. Good for patients who grind or clench.
The Crown Process
Visit 1: Preparation and Impression
Local anesthesia numbs the tooth. We remove decay and shape the tooth so the crown will fit over it.
Between Visits
A dental lab fabricates your custom crown, usually in 1-2 weeks. You wear the temporary crown during this time.
Visit 2: Cementing the Permanent Crown
We remove the temporary, check the fit and color of the permanent crown, and cement it in place. Takes about 30 minutes.

How Long Do Crowns Last?
With good oral hygiene, crowns typically last 10-15+ years. Grinding, hard foods, and poor hygiene can shorten this.
Frequently Asked Questions Dental Crowns
Will the crown look like my natural tooth?
Yes. Modern porcelain and zirconia crowns are color-matched to your existing teeth and are difficult to distinguish from natural enamel.
Will it hurt?
Preparation is done under local anesthesia, so no pain. You may have mild sensitivity for a few days after.
What if my temporary crown comes off?
Call us. We will recement it. Do not try to chew on that side until it is repaired.
Can a crown get a cavity?
The crown itself cannot decay, but the underlying tooth can if bacteria get under the edge. Good hygiene and regular checkups prevent this.
Does Medicaid cover crowns?
Michigan Medicaid covers crowns in many cases. We verify coverage before treatment.
