When You Need a Root Canal

How a Root Canal Works

1. Local anesthesia completely numbs the tooth and surrounding tissue.
2. Access opening made through the top of the tooth.
3. Pulp removal of the infected or damaged nerve tissue.
4. Cleaning and shaping of the root canals.
5. Irrigation with antibacterial solution.
6. Filling the canals with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha.
7. Core buildup to rebuild the tooth structure.
8. Crown placed in a second visit to protect the tooth.

Why You Need a Crown After a Root Canal

A root-canaled tooth becomes brittle over time because it no longer has nerve supply. A crown protects the tooth from fracture, which is the main reason root-canaled teeth fail. Our $950 root canal pricing includes the crown for this reason.
