A dental emergency is any oral health issue that needs to be seen within hours, not days. Severe pain, visible swelling, trauma, uncontrolled bleeding, knocked-out teeth, and lost restorations all qualify. This page walks you through the most common emergencies we see at Macomb Emergency Dental Clinic, what you should do before you get here.

Most dental emergencies look scary but are very treatable when caught early. The key is not to wait. Pain that you can "sleep off" one night often becomes unbearable the next day, and infections that start as a mild ache can become seriously dangerous in 48-72 hours if untreated. Common Dental Emergencies

Severe Toothache

Throbbing, constant pain that over-the-counter medications will not control usually means decay has reached the nerve or an infection is brewing. Come in the same day. Root canal or extraction will typically resolve the issue.

Dental Infection or Abscess

Signs include facial swelling, fever, a bad taste or smell, and intense throbbing pain. This is a true urgency. We prescribe antibiotics if needed, and address the underlying tooth with a root canal or extraction.

Lost Crown or Filling

A lost crown exposes the underlying tooth, which can be painful and may fracture. Save the crown if you have it. We can usually recement or replace it the same day.

Broken Dentures or Partials

Broken dentures mean you cannot eat, speak, or work normally. Our denture repair service handles most repairs the same day.
