A toothache is your body's way of telling you that something is wrong with a tooth or the surrounding tissue. Mild, occasional pain is often from mild sensitivity or grinding. But severe, constant, or throbbing pain almost always means decay has reached the nerve, a crack has developed, or an infection is forming. Waiting makes it worse, not better. Over-the-counter medication can dull the pain for a few hours, but they do not fix the underlying problem, and the pain usually returns stronger.

At Macomb Emergency Dental Clinic, we diagnose the cause of your toothache during a single visit using digital X-rays and, when needed, Cone Beam CT imaging. Once we know what is causing the pain, we treat it the same day whenever possible. That might mean a filling, a root canal, drainage of an abscess, or an extraction. Whatever it takes to get you out of pain.

Common Causes of Toothaches

Tooth Decay (Cavity)

When decay reaches the nerve, it causes sharp or throbbing pain, especially with hot, cold, or sweet foods. Early decay is treated with a filling. Deeper decay requires a root canal.

Cracked or Broken Tooth

A cracked tooth hurts when you bite down. Hairline cracks can be hard to see on X-rays but cause real pain. Treatment ranges from bonding to crown to root canal, depending on how deep the crack goes.

Dental Infection or Abscess

Pain with swelling, fever, or a bad taste almost always means infection. antibiotics, and treatment of the underlying tooth.

Gum Disease

Advanced gum disease can cause tooth pain, looseness, and sensitivity. Requires a deep cleaning and sometimes further treatment.

Tooth Grinding (Bruxism)

Chronic grinding causes generalized tooth pain, jaw soreness, and worn teeth. Treated with a night guard and occlusal adjustment.

For complex cases or suspected fractures, we may use Cone Beam CT for a 3D view. Most diagnoses take 10-20 minutes, and we explain the cause and options before any treatment begins. Treatment Options

Filling ($160-$225): for early decay.
Root Canal + Core + Crown ($950): for deep decay or infection that has reached the nerve.
Crown ($500): for cracked or structurally compromised teeth.
Extraction ($125 simple, $200 surgical): when the tooth cannot be saved.
Infection drainage + antibiotics: for abscesses, often combined with root canal or extraction.
