A dental filling is the most common dental restoration. When a tooth has a cavity, we remove the decay and fill the space with a material that restores the tooth's shape and function. At Macomb Emergency Dental Clinic, we use tooth-colored composite resin for all our fillings, which matches your natural tooth color and bonds directly to the tooth structure for strength and longevity.

Fillings can almost always be completed during the same visit. For emergency patients who come in with pain from a cavity, we diagnose, numb, and place the filling in one appointment (typically 30-60 minutes). Our pricing is transparent, our process is fast, and we accept Medicaid and most major insurance.

When You Need a Filling

  • Visible cavity or dark spot on the tooth
  • Sensitivity to sweet, hot, or cold foods
  • A chip or small fracture
  • A lost filling from a previous restoration
  • Tooth pain when biting or chewing
  • Cavities found during an X-ray even without symptoms

Why We Use Composite (Not Amalgam)

Composite resin fillings are tooth-colored, mercury-free, and bond directly to the tooth for better strength. They are our default material for almost all fillings. Unlike old silver amalgam fillings, composites do not require removal of healthy tooth structure for retention.

The Filling Process

  1. Exam and X-rays to confirm the cavity and check for additional issues.
  2. Local anesthesia to numb the area.
  3. Tooth preparation with an etching agent and bonding solution.
  4. Composite placement in layers, each cured with a special light.
  5. Shaping and polishing so the filling feels natural when you bite.

Most fillings take 30-60 minutes from start to finish.

Pricing

  • Composite filling, 1-2 surfaces: $160
  • Composite filling, 3-5 surfaces: $225

Self-pay rates shown. With Medicaid or dental insurance, your out-of-pocket is usually lower. See full pricing.

How Long Do Fillings Last?

Composite fillings typically last 5-10+ years. Longevity depends on size, location, your bite forces, and oral hygiene. Regular checkups help catch issues before the filling fails.

After Your Filling

  • Numbness lasts 2-4 hours. Avoid chewing until it wears off.
  • Mild sensitivity to hot and cold is normal for a few days.
  • If your bite feels off after numbness wears off, call us for a quick adjustment.

Frequently Asked Questions Dental Fillings

Does getting a filling hurt?

Local anesthesia blocks all pain during the procedure. You may feel pressure or vibration but no pain.

Can you see composite fillings?

No. Composite is color-matched to your tooth and is invisible to most people.

What if I need multiple fillings?

We can do several fillings in one visit if they are in the same area. For fillings in different quadrants, we may schedule 1-2 visits.

What if the cavity is too deep?

If decay has reached the nerve, a filling is not enough. We will recommend a root canal and crown instead.

Will Medicaid cover fillings?

Yes. Michigan Medicaid covers composite fillings in most cases.

Do you take walk-ins?

Yes, we welcome walk-in patients during our normal business hours. We do our best tosee you as quickly as possible.
